With a greater number of funds avail- able than ever before, how do you find the best investment choices for your clients? The ‘Spreadsheet View’ within

Globe HySales is a powerful research tool to help you find the answer. In the step-by-step below, we’ ll filter down the mutual funds database based on specific criteria and then sort and customize the columns within the spreadsheet.

Step 1: Filtering The Spreadsheet.

To access the ‘ Spreadsheet View’ , click <spreadsheet.gif (870 bytes)> or select ‘ Spreadsheet View’ from the dropdown menu. Look at the bottom of the screen and you will notice that there are over 2,200 mutual funds in the spreadsheet. To filter down the database based on your specific criteria, select the filter button <filter.gif (892 bytes) >. Globe HySales provides numerous options on which to filter the universe of funds. For this example, let’ s find funds in specific fund families that have a minimum 10-year return of 10%. Click the <Returns> tab and enter 10 in the ‘ 10-year minimum’ category. Next, select the <Groups> tab and choose your desired fund families (for this example, we’ ll select Mackenzie , Investors Group and CI fund families). Note: to select more than one fund family, hold down the <Ctrl> button on your keyboard while clicking on the specific family. Click <OK>. Notice at the bottom of the screen that your database of funds has been filtered to a much more manageable number.

Step 2: Sorting The Spreadsheet.

Now that you’ ve filtered your database, you can run a primary, secondary or tertiary sort on the various columns within the ‘ Spreadsheet View’ . The spreadsheet is automatically sorted on fund name, but for this example we’ ll run a sort by fund investment category and ranking in terms of 10-year average returns. Click the sort button <a-z.gif (998 bytes)> and select ‘ Investment Category’ from the menu. Next, click <More > and select ’ Return – 10 yr. avg.’ as your secondary sort. Click <OK>. (Hint: to sort in ascending or descending order on a particular column, simply double-click on the top of the column. An arrow will appear indicating whether funds are sorted in ascending or descending order.)

Step 3: Hints to Customize Your Spreadsheet.

Once you’ ve run a sort, click the ‘ Column Setup’ button <column.gif (900 bytes)> so the columns you specified in your sort (in this case, investment category and 10 year average return) appear immediately after the fund name on the spreadsheet. Under ‘ Column Setup’ , select ‘ Investment Category’ and click the <Move Up> button until it sits directly under ‘ Fund Name’ . Then, select ‘ Return – 10 Yr. Avg.’ and click <Move Up> until it’ s under ‘ Investment Category’ . Click <OK>. Your spreadsheet should now show the fund name, investment category and the 10-year average return. If there are columns in the spreadsheet that you don’ t use and would like to hide from view, simply click the ‘ Column Setup’ button <column.gif (900 bytes)> again. Select the columns you wish to hide on the spreadsheet and click <Hide>. They will no longer appear on the spreadsheet. Note: the <Default> button will return the column setup to the system default.

By using these various shortcuts, you now have a well-organized, carefully selected spreadsheet that will enable you to quickly find the best funds for your clients.
