Easily Create and Save Basic and Customized Hypotheticals

HySales 8.7 makes creating hypotheticals faster and easier than ever before. To create a basic hypothetical, click the hypothetical button, verify that your desired securities are selected, then click . That's all there is to it! A basic hypothetical in just two clicks.

This Step-by-Step column will show you how to create a customized hypothetcial illustration in just three easy steps. In this example, we'll create an illustration showing an initial investment in a single mutual fund at the fund's inception followed by a dollar-cost averaging investment strategy of $100 per month.

Step 1: From any view, click the hypothetical button from the tool bar. From the settings box, select your desired investment type (open-end funds) by selecting the radio button next to the desired database . In the 'Search for' dialog box , type the desired security(s)'s name, highlight it and click the arrow key to move the security(s) to your selected items list. (Note: if you ran a filter prior to running a hypothetical, you have the option to select from the entire universe of securities or just your filtered securities .) Select 'Single' from the illustration 'Type' box . (Note: To create a comparison or portfolio illustration select that type of investment from the 'type' box.) The tabs on the top of the settings menu let you select investment schedules and amounts, as well as specify the type of illustrations you want to show and print. (Note: These tabs change depending on the type of illustration you are running.)

Next you need to select your investment scheme. To do this, click the 'General' tab. In the 'Scheme' dialog box , select 'Systematic Investment - Constant Dollar.' Now type '100,000' in the 'Initial Investment' dialog box . Select 'Since Inception' from the 'Period' drop down box . (Note: Because you selected a general time period, HySales will automatically update your graph to the most recent time period with every update.) For your subsequent investment amount enter '100' in the 'Amount' dialog box and select 'Monthly' from the 'Frequency' drop down box . Your illustration is now set up, click .

Step 2: Now you're in the hypothetical view. To see the hypothetical illustration information in a variety of ways (i.e. pie graph, mountain graph, line graph, etc...), click the buttons on the hypothetical view tool bar.

The drop down box on the left side of your screen allows you to view different securities by clicking on the arrow and highlighting them . The drop down box on the right allows you to switch between single, comparison and portfolio views . If at any time you want to change your hypothetical view settings, just click the settings button.

Step 3: To save your illustration scenario in your client file, you need to first create a client file. Click the save button on the tool bar. Type a file name (usually the client's name) in the 'File Name' dialog box and click .

Now you're ready to save the scenario you've created. Click the 'Store Scenario' button <> on the toolbar. Type an illustration name in the 'File Name' dialog box and type a brief description that will help you remember the details of this illustration in the 'Description' dialog box . Click . Your scenario is now saved in your client file. To retrieve this scenario, click the load scenario button on the toolbar. Select the scenario you want to load, then click .

Congratulations! You've just created and saved an illustration in HySales 8.7. If you have any problems creating an illustration or using Globe HySales refer to the available on-line help, user card or Quick Start View.

Explaining Risk vs. Reward to Your Client

Suppose you have a client who's not happy with the returns on his current portfolio. Like many investors, he wants higher rewards but doesn't understand risk. You know that, with the right funds, higher risk often means higher rewards. So how do you explain this to your client in a way that's easy to understand? With the Risk/Reward Scatter Chart in Globe HySales!

The Scatter Chart compares the risk-to-reward profile of any fund to that of other funds and indexes you select. Let's say your client currently invests in a Canadian Equity fund with average risk but below-average returns. You can load all the Canadian Equity funds in Globe HySales and plot them on the chart with a few clicks of your mouse. Label the fund you're recommending and show your client how, relative to its peers, this fund has historically produced higher returns with little, if any, increased risk.

The Globe HySales Scatter Chart allows you to plot funds for 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15-year periods, and you can select more than one index to provide additional benchmarks.

Note: we recommend that you load either all funds from the same family or the same asset class in order for your illustration to remain relevant and compliant.

With Globe HySales, it's never been easier to educate your clients about the trade-off between risk and reward. And it's never been easier to close the sale.
